U16 hurlers start league campaign with a win

Blues U14 footballers exited the Feile competition in Eyeries on Saturday last when they were defeated by a good Urhan side.

From the throw in Beara lads were ready for action and hit three early points in quick succession. When they followed up with a goal it was looking ominous for Bantry. However the switching of full back Gavin Cronin to centre and Ronan O’Mahony into the full back position in an attempt to curb Urhans full forward proved a good move. Gavin began to win possession in the middle third and Daniel Murray opened Blues account with a pointed free. Urhan did score two more points before Bantry entered their best period of the game. Jack McCarthy was dominating at midfield and Blues converted this possession into scores when Daniel Murray netted to reduce the deficit. Target-man Patrick Casey further closed the gap with another goal. Substitute Dylan Carthy was fouled on the wing and knocked over the free himself the level matters. As half time approached Urhan scored two points to leave the score at the break, Bantry Blues 2-02, Urhan 1-07.

Bantry looked to be right in the game as the second half began but it was Urhan who got the decisive scores. Within five minutes of the resumption the home team had two goals to their credit and Bantry now had a mountain to climb. They battled bravely and reduced Urhan's lead to five with a point from Patrick Casey and two frees by Daniel Murray, but Urhan struck back with another goal to kill off any comeback. Full forward Patrick Casey switched with midfielder Savo Dragas and Savo did put away a well taken goal but it was too little too late. Daniel Murray hit another point but Urhan finished the game with two points to leave the final score Bantry Blues: 3-06, Urhan: 4-09.

This was a fine game of football from two committed teams but Bantry can have no complaints about being beaten by a strong Urhan side. Blues stuck to the task throughout and displayed good team spirit. Bantry man of the match Jack McCarthy was tireless at midfield, Sean Thornton and Eoghan O’Shea defended well and Barry O’Sullivan, Daniel Murray and Patrick Casey were to the fore in attack. Shane McSweeney adapted well to the defensive role he was given in the first half also.

Bantry Blues U14 mentors and players appreciate the hospitality shown them by Urhan GAA who provided tea and sandwiches in their clubhouse after the game.

Bantry U16 hurlers had a big win against Carbery Rangers in their opening league game in Wolfe Tone Park on Monday night last. Anthony Hanley was on song and had three goals and a point to his credit by half time. Tim Foley scored three points in the opening period with Shane McCarthy and Seán O’Leary’s point apiece making up Bantry’s half time score of 3-06 to Rangers 0-02.

It was more of the same in the second half with Sean Hodnett getting Bantry’s first point after the restart. Substitute James Lavin came on to score 1-01 with Tim Foley and Anthony Hanley continuing to find the mark. At the end the score stood at 6-10 to Carbery Rangers 0-04, Anthony Hanley having hit 5-01 of the total.

This was a handy run out against a depleted Carbery Rangers side but the signs were encouraging with good touches all around for Bantry.
